Emergence and Advancement of Technologies: Regulatory Challenges and Considerations

Dr. Yohannes Haile is currently working in a capacity of a senior scientific evaluator (regulatory scientist) at the Centre for Biologics Evaluation within Health Canada, where he evaluates cell and gene therapy products. He leads the Science and Regulatory Preparedness working group under the Science and Research Integration Network initiative, and maintains academic affiliations. Moreover, Yohannes represents Health Canada in the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in a capacity of a member of subcommittee on Lymphohematopoietic Cells Standards. Before joining Health Canada in the mid of 2017, Yohannes worked in capacities of researcher at the University of Alberta, and a sessional lecturer of Human Anatomy at the King’s University in Edmonton. Yohannes earned PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover/Hannover Medical School; M.Sc. in Molecular Microbiology and Aquatic Ecology from the Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, University of Bremen, Germany; and a postdoc at the University of Alberta. He has a broad range of training and experience in neuroscience, neuroimmunology/immunology, cell biology, molecular microbiology as well as stem cells and regenerative medicine; and has published several articles in the above fields. He gave guest lectures and invited presentations in several universities and institutes. He received several awards including the Med Star Postdoctoral Fellow Award from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, and the Alberta Health Services.
