Elena Grabski, head of the human vaccine quality section in the department Infectology at Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), Germany, studied biochemistry and conducted her PhD in infection immunology. During her subsequent post-doc time, she performed translational infection research. In 2016 she started working for the German regulatory agency (PEI) as a quality assessor responsible for new marketing authorization procedures, life-cycle management and clinical trial application for human vaccines and participating in GMP inspections as expert for vaccines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she assessed several COVID-19 vaccines including mRNA-based ones and was heavily involved in supporting accelerated assessment for clinical trials, regulatory procedures and scientific advices.
Additionally she contributes to pre-qualification procedures and guideline meetings for the WHO. Since 2021 she is member of the biologics working party (BWP) vaccine core group at the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
2023 she became head of the viral vaccine section entailing additionally the oversight of batch release testing for vaccines. The same year she also joined the BWP as a member. After reorganization of the former Virology and Microbiology divisions at PEI she became head of the human vaccine quality section in the new Infectology division in 2024, responsible for all human vaccines. Recently she was appointed deputy head of the Infectology division.
