Patrick Merkle

Patrick Merkle, Ph.D., has been with Novartis since 2018 and currently serves as a Senior Expert in the Analytical Characterization team within the Technical Research and Development (TRD) unit Biologics in Basel, Switzerland. His responsibilities include the development and implementation of the LC-MS multi-attribute method (MAM) as an end-to-end technology to support the Quality-by-Design-based development of biopharmaceutical drugs. Patrick's expertise includes the in-depth characterization of proteins, routine monitoring of post-translational modifications, and automation of mass spectrometry-based analytical workflows. Before joining Novartis, Patrick graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Basel, Switzerland. He completed his Ph.D. in the Protein Analysis Group at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, where he studied the conformational dynamics of different integral membrane proteins using solution-phase hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry.
