Domenico Genovese

Dr. Domenico Genovese is senior researcher at National Centre for the Control and Evaluation of Medicines of Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Rome (Italy). He joined ISS in 1986, after working in Prof. Enrico Calef’s lab at “Nucleic Acid Division” of CNR and in Prof. Arrigo Benedetto’s virology lab at the Spallanzani Hospital, where he contributed to researches on “Epstein Barr virus” and on “Friend murine leukemia virus”. From 1986 to 2009, Dr. Genovese worked in the virology lab of ISS, where he was initially involved in poliovirus biological and molecular characterization as well as in its genetic neurovirulence determinant studies. He also expanded his research on poliovirus as a model for antiviral research and cap independent cell translation. From 1998, he joined the “hepatitis” group of the same lab where he contributed to the standardization of NAT technology in blood screening and started his studies on variability and molecular epidemiology of hepatitis virus. From 2009, Dr. Genovese joined the Global Health Unit of the drugs department continuing his molecular epidemiology studies and starting to work on the human genetic host factors involved in viral infection and therapy as well as in the therapy personalization of viral hepatitis patients. Since March 2017, he has worked in Prof. Carlo Pini’s Centre. Dr. Genovese’s current research focuses on the introduction of next generation sequencing methodology in the research activity of the Centre. His regulatory responsibilities include viral safety review of Investigational Medicinal Products, quality and non-clinical assessment for Biological License Application as well as scientific advice procedures. Dr. Genovese received his Ph.D in virology and microbiology from “La Sapienza” University in Rome and he was a post-doctoral fellow at Mc Gill University in Montreal.
