Professor Antonio Moreira is Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Prior to his current position, he has been Chair of the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology, and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. Before joining UMBC, Prof. Moreira spent 10 years in the private sector where he held senior technical management positions with International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. and Merck & Co. (then Schering-Plough Corp.), both in New Jersey. At Merck, he was responsible for the fermentation process development team that brought alpha-interferon to the market with approval by the FDA and many other international regulatory agencies. He was responsible for the manufacture of biologics and worked on additional biopharmaceutical products such as gamma interferon, GM-CSF, and IL-4. He is a frequent guest speaker at international conferences and symposia, has authored and co-authored over 250 publications and presentations, and is a highly regarded international expert in biomanufacturing, regulatory science and workforce development activities.

Prof. Moreira is originally from Portugal where he obtained his BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Porto. He went on to obtain his MS and PhD in chemical and biochemical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA and did post-doctoral work at the University of Waterloo in Canada. He was honored by the President of the Republic of Portugal in 2014 with the National Order of Public Education and was awarded the title of Comendador. He is an Honorary International Member of the Brazilian Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and is currently Chair of the Board of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering Foundation. He is a graduate of Leadership Maryland, class of 1998.
